We Hold These Truths
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” -The Declaration of Independence, 1776-
We live in a time when many would like us to believe that this country’s Founding Fathers were not religious men, or if they were, they were Deists at best. I for one, am convinced the words above, taken from The Declaration of Independence, could not have been written by someone with no faith in God.
As we approach July 4, 2020, I invite you to take some time and contemplate the words in that one sentence. Break it down, word by word, phrase by phrase. All men created equal, endowed by their Creator, with unalienable rights, the right of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Where did these ideas originate? They came from Scripture, my friend.
Self-evident truths, written on every human heart by the Sovereign God of the universe, who created mankind in His own image. He is the one who has planted in every human heart the desire to be free, free from bondage's
of spirit, soul, and body. The desire to be free to live and love and prosper. The desire to know joy and happiness.
Our nation seems to be skidding sideways today because we have forgotten that human rights are the gift of God not government. Government’s rightful roll is to offer protection to its citizens that they might be free to thrive in the endeavors of their own choices. Free to thrive, independent of excessive taxes and regulations and rules that strangle instead of liberate.
As you and your family come into this Independence Day of 2020, thank God for the liberties that we have enjoyed, pray that God would restore the freedoms that we have lost, pray that He would protect the privileges that are still ours as we move into a very uncertain future.
May we pray together, “America! America! God shed His grace on thee, and crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea.”
