As I think about the year that lies out ahead of us, a particular word fills my mind…Revival. Revival is a term that does not have to do with the unsaved, though true revival in a community always profoundly affects the unsaved. Revival is a fresh awakening in the heart of the believer.

Revival is a phenomenon that happens in the life of a believer when the Holy Spirit is given permission to dust out the nooks and crannies of our hearts. Nooks and crannies that for one reason or another that have collected the clutter of the world, clutter that numbs our spiritual sensibilities, and causes us to be content with the status quo. Let me give you an example.

My mother kept a very clean house. She was continually scrubbing and vacuuming and mopping the various surfaces in her house. On top of her daily and weekly cleaning, she was a firm believer in Spring Cleaning. During Spring Cleaning, the stove and refrigerator and washer and dryer were moved out and the year’s accumulation of dust and grime and various foreign objects were revealed. Once those spaces were cleaned the appliances were pushed back into place.

Revival happens in our personal lives when we give the Holy Spirit permission to move out the refrigerator and stove of our hearts, exposing areas that need attention.

May our hearts echo the words of the Psalmist, “Turn away my eyes from looking at vanity, and revive me in Your ways. Establish You word to Your servant, as that which produces reverence for You. Turn away my reproach which I dread, for Your ordinances are goo. Behold, I long for Your precepts; revive me through Your righteousness” (Psalm 119:37-40).

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, my prayer for you in the daysahead comes from the words of the hymn written by William P. Mackay…

“Revive us again, fill each heart with Thy love

May each soul be rekindled with fire from above.

Hallelujah! Thine the Glory. Hallelujah! Amen

Hallelujah! Thine the Glory. Revive us again.”
