Love is the Glue

“So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.” Colossians 3:12-14

I have been pondering the subjects of unity and love and how they empower Christ’s church to be a visible witness to a watching world. As I have been prayerfully searching the word of God, I keep coming across passages that link the two together, such as the one I’ve just presented to you.

In this passage, we see that unity needs a binding agent. Unity needs a glue, as it were, something that holds those of like mind together. Love is identified as that bonding agent.

In this instance, it is agape love, love that considers others as more important than oneself, it is the love that filled the heart of our Lord Jesus, when He took on the form of a servant and laid down His life for the sins of the world.

It is the love that empowers believers to follow that admonition given by the apostle Paul to the church at Philippi. “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:3-5).

Today, we are being tested from every side, the pandemic of Covid19, racial unrest, political unrest. These are the seasons that present the church with its greatest opportunity to be the Light of the World. When unified by the message of the Gospel, bound together by the love of God that has been shed abroad in our hearts, in no way alarmed by our opponents, Christ’s church can walk with confidence through these very troubled times, because we know in whom we have believed and know that He is able to work all of these things together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purposes. Thereby becoming to a watching world a beacon of hope and love and peace
