Our Great Purpose

Our Great Purpose

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” (I Peter 2:9).

One of mankind’s great searches is the search for significance, the search for purpose, “Why am I here?” The testimony of scripture is that we were created for the glory of God. Mankind’s ability to proclaim the glory of God was broken and marred when sin entered the world. From Genesis 3 on, we read the record of God’s attempts to draw men to Himself, that record culminates in the birth, life, death, burial, and resurrection of His only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

When reconciled to God through redeeming blood of His Son, God then speaks His ultimate purpose to us once again in the I Peter 2:9, we have been created, we have been born again, to be living and breathing proclamations of the excellencies of the Lord Jesus Christ, the One calls sinners out of darkness into His marvelous light.

The purpose statement that is found I Peter 2:9 is also found in Psalm 145. I invite you to take some time to read the entire Psalm and meditate upon it.

Psalm 145:5-13

“One generation shall praise Your works to another and shall declare Your mighty acts.

On the glorious splendor of Your majesty and on Your wonderful works, I will meditate.

Men shall speak of the power of Your awesome acts, and I will tell of Your greatness.

They shall eagerly utter the memory of Your abundant goodness and will shout joyfully

of Your righteousness. The Lord is gracious and merciful; slow to anger and great in

lovingkindness. The Lord is good to all, and His mercies are over all His works. All Your

works shall give thanks to You, O Lord, and Your godly ones shall bless You. They

shall speak of the glory of Your kingdom and talk of Your power; to make known to the

sons of men Your mighty acts and the glory of the majesty of Your kingdom. Your

kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and Your dominion endures throughout all

generations.”

Did you see it? We are the ones called to proclaim God’s glory. We are the ones who

have been called to make known to those around us, the sons of men, the mighty acts

of God and the majesty of His kingdom.

That our lives may overflow with purpose and meaning, Almighty God, Creator of

heaven and earth, Redeemer of fallen mankind, has called us into His eternal work,

whereby He will be glorified, and we will be ultimately fulfilled. This, my dear friends, is

our purpose for living and the true source of all fulfillment.
